Become An Expert Axe Thrower

Man Holding Axe - things to do in idaho fallsYou probably weren’t expecting that one. However, axe throwing is starting to grow in popularity. Think of it as an extreme form of bowling. Bowling but with axes. Sounds fun, right? That’s exactly what we thought, which is why we started On Target Axe Throwing to bring the joy of axe throwing to our local community, making it one of the most fun things to do in Idaho Falls.

If you’ve never tried this activity before, we can teach you! We’ll arm you with the skills and confidence you need to get started and supervise you along the way. You’d be surprised at how fast you get the hang of it. Once you’re confident enough in your ability to swing that axe and nail the target, you and your friends and family can compete against each other in a number of axe-throwing games. With 14 lanes, each of which can accommodate 5 people, you don’t have to worry about space.

You’ll likely find this to be one of the most fun things to do in Idaho Falls! It’s a great activity for:

Go Skating

Ever been to the Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena? It’s an awesome time! They have plenty of things for you to do like hockey scrimmage. There’s also the Tautphaus Park Football Field outdoor ice rink as well. Don’t have your own pair of ice skates? No problem! Just rent a pair at the arena.

Or, let’s say you don’t exactly feel like getting out on the ice. You can always just enjoy a hockey game or figure skating show. Concessions are also provided so you might even want to skip dinner.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Tautphaus Park and Freeman Park have grooming trails during the winter that you can explore. This is one of the more fun things to do in Idaho Falls during the winter. You can rent your own cross-country equipment at the Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto arena at Tautphaus Park.

Kelly Canyon Ski Resort is another fine place to go skiing and snowboarding located just 30 minutes from Idaho Falls. They have plenty of exciting and beautiful trails for you to explore, as well as jumps, boxes, and rails to test and improve your skills. You can also rent everything you need on the slopes right there at the resort.

Kelly Canyon isn’t just a great place for winter-time activities either. During the spring and summer, you can challenge yourself with their:

  • Bike Trails
  • Running Trails
  • Gnarly Bear 50K Endurance Run

Check Out The Zoo At Tautphaus Park

Our local zoo has plenty of interesting and playful animals to observe. It has everything from rambunctious monkeys to dazzling birds and mighty lions. It’s a great place for family nights out. They also provide plenty of concessions, so grab some tasty food, observe the awesome animals, and enjoy yourself!

Take A Stroll Along The Greenbelt

If you’re trying to think of fun things to do in Idaho Falls, going on a walk is a great way to clear your mind and allow ideas to flow. If you’re going to do that, you may as well do so at the Greenbelt. It’s a beautiful place to take a walk along the river, enjoying the sights and smells of spring, summer, and autumn. Of course, you can also take a walk during the frigid winter (if you’re that hardcore!).

Go Ice Fishing

Fishing is a big part of Idaho Falls culture. Plenty of people do it, but too many limit themselves to the relatively limited warm window of opportunity that we have in the spring and summer. Ice fishing, however, is one of the most fun things to do in Idaho Falls during the winter, especially if you already know how to fish. It presents a new challenge and a different form of fishing.

You don’t need many supplies to go ice fishing. If you go fishing a lot, you probably already have almost everything you need. The only exception is an auger to drill through the ice.

Of course, you’ll also need all of the necessary outerwear to keep you warm while you ice fish. Warm clothes and a thermos of hot coffee are always a great idea. You can also get yourself a thermal hut and a space heater to keep you nice and warm while you’re waiting for a bit.

Idaho Falls has 31 lakes and reservoirs where you can enjoy ice fishing for hours or an entire day.

Get In The Hot Spring After Going Snowshoeing

One of the most fun things to do in Idaho Falls during the winter is to go snowshoeing to a toasty hot spring where you can take a dip and relax. Think about the physical challenge of snowshoeing and the mental rewards that come with it, only to have these efforts rewarded by soaking your muscles in a natural hot spring. For many, that’s the ideal way of getting out of the monotony and boredom of our long, harsh winters in Idaho. Just get yourself a pair of snowshoes and find the perfect trail!

Dog Sledding

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Idaho Falls, it doesn’t take long to make your way up to Ashton for the American Dog Derby. This occurs every third week of February year-round. You can join the 100-yard Mutt Race to see how your dog performs.

You can also simply take a dog sledding tour for the mere experience of it. Ashton’s Silver Sage Mushing allows you to choose many tours ranging from short tours to four-mile tours. This will give you a view of the Tetons that you don’t want to miss out on.

Be sure to dress warm and bring sunglasses or goggles. Dogs can reach speeds of roughly 12 miles an hour, and snow will likely be kicked up. You also want to prevent snow blindness. You can also take some beautiful pictures of the Tetons, so bring your cell phone or a good camera. It’s easily one of the most fun things to do in Idaho Falls.
